In the third of a series of pre-season reports, HarryFromBath assesses the mood around the Championship clubs by delving into their forums. The East Lancashire teams of Burnley, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers are under the spotlight in today’s notes.
Colchester 0-3 Town Tue 23rd Jul 2013 21:33
Goals from Luke Chambers, David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy (pen) saw the Blues to a 3-0 victory over Colchester at the Weston Homes Community Stadium and maintained their 100% record in pre-season. Town were well on top in a first half and were two goals up at the break with Murphy adding the third from the spot after he had been fouled in a half in which the U’s presented a greater threat.
Crawley 1-2 Town Wed 10th Jul 2013 21:35
Daryl Murphy netted his third goal of pre-season and David McGoldrick scored from the spot as Town beat Crawley 2-1 at the Broadfield Stadium. The goals came in either half with manager Mick McCarthy again fielding a different team in each half.

Two goals from Daryl Murphy shortly after half-time saw the Blues to a 2-0 victory over Shelbourne in their first pre-season friendly at Tolka Park, Dublin. Town fielded a different team in each half with trialists Dean Gerken and Dan Seaborne involved after the break.

Town dominated the first half of their pre-season friendly against Shelbourne in Dublin, Frank Nouble going close twice, but were unable to break the deadlock.

A side led by Bryan Hamilton overcame a team managed by Mick Mills 1-0 in a tight encounter to carry off the Portman Cup at Portman Road yesterday afternoon. Both teams were made up of fans who had paid for the privilege of getting taste of what it’s like to be a player on matchday.

Town boss Mick McCarthy says striker Paul Taylor should be fit enough to join in with the rest of the squad at the start of pre-season. The 25-year-old has been out of action since suffering a foot injury which eventually required surgery in only his third game for the Blues against Wolves in September, shortly after joining from Peterborough United for an initial fee of £1.5 million which could rise to £2.5 million.

Jay Tabb scored his first goal for four and a half years as Town drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday as they continued, but were unable to complete, their march to Championship safety. The on-loan Reading man’s knee diverted home a Carlos Edwards long throw in the first half of a scrappy game in which the Owls equalised after the break through Leroy Lita.
McCarthy Without Strike Pair for Hull Clash Fri 12th Apr 2013 15:14
Manager Mick McCarthy will be without strikers David McGoldrick and Aaron Mclean for Saturday’s home game against Hull City. McGoldrick’s 93-day loan from Nottingham Forest is up and Mclean is unavailable against his parent club, while midfielder Lee Martin and defender Reece Brown again look set to miss out due to illness.
